After taking a short walk from the Church Square, you get to the Old Market, the oldest
settlement center in Kežmarok. The market is lined with picturesque houses, the foun
dations of which date back to the 13th century. There are indications of so-called tower
houses in several of those houses, which imply that the houses served as small defensive
fortresses before the construction of the town fortifications. The reconstructions of many
houses took place in the Renaissance, Baroque and Classicist styles. The walls of some of
them reach a thickness of 1 to 1.5 m. Other houses, which are characteristic for the Old
Market, are single story houses, have shingled roofs and belonged to craftsmen. The Old
Market is the original historical core of the town
