Historical cemetery

Kežmarok historical cemetery is not far from the New Evangelical Church. It was found
ed during the Counter-Reformation. Protestants had to bury their dead outside the town
walls. For this reason, today’s cemetery was established in 1674. The oldest tombstone is
from 1691. It gradually expanded and Catholics were also buried in it from the end of the
18th century. It was so customary that evangelicals were buried to the right of the entrance
and Catholics were buried to the left. It was adhered to until 1945.
The cemetery is located at Toporcerova Street. The remains of important personalities
of the town are stored here. Among others, Karol Wein, the founder of a flax factory, is
buried there as well.
