The vast majority of Kežmarok male population dealt
with craft and trade. The eldest craftsmen provided
people with the most important things – food, clothing,
footwear, working tools, weapons. Out of the total number
of working population, 85 % people dealt with craft,
what represented the highest percentage of craftsmen
in the territory of Slovakia. The craftsmen of the same
or related craft merged into guilds. There were up to 50
guilds in the 15th – 19th century in Kežmarok. This number
ranked Kežmarok among the top ten towns in Slovakia.
